Happy Chinese Valentine’s Day!
We went to one of the only 2 temples left in Hong Kong that still celebrate the Seven Sister festival 七夕 - 七聖古廟 Seven Sisters temple this morning to see how people celebrate the festival.
This was a love story between 牛郎, an ordinary cowherd in earth and 織女, the daughter of the Mother of Heaven 王母娘娘. The Mother of Heaven got so angry when she knew her daughter got married and gave birth to children with an ordinary man - the cowherd 牛郎, so she sent minions to bring her daughter back to heaven.
The cowherd 牛郎 brought the two kids and chased after. The Heaven of Mother immediately made a river between the Heaven and earth to separate the two. Magpies 🐦 on land was touched and formed a Magpie bridge allowing the cowherd 牛郎 to cross. Their love eventually moved the Mother of Heaven and she allowed the couples to meet on the Magpie Bridge once a year on the 7th day of the 7th lunar month, that is today.
This was once a very popular festival among young woman in the past that they prayed for embroidery skills 巧手 and a good husband. When do they offer to 七姐，the 七姐盤 Seven sister Basin in the second picture with high heels, handbags, perfumes, blush and makeup powder - anything feminine.
